Through a
Woman's Eyes
The evolving
role of women
from Colonial times to the present
|
You're invited to visit the
Trumbull Historical Society's new exhibit, "Through a Woman's Eyes," now on
display at the society's museum at 1856 Huntington Turnpike in the Nichols
section of Trumbull.
The exhibit, researched and
organized by Historical Society volunteers, offers a chronological walk
alongside American women of four centuries, from the first settlers through the
20th century.
Along the way, you'll can see
the clothes they wore, learn about objects from their everyday experience, and
even take away some of the lessons they learned as women's roles evolved within
the social landscape of an ever-changing nation.
Many of the items on display are
from the Society's permanent collection, and reflect specific Trumbull
connections, including pewter chargers (plates) used by early members of the
Nichols family and a mid-nineteenth century dress from the family of longtime
town clerk Helen Plumb. Other pieces were graciously loaned to complete our
timeline where the society's collections fell short.
Highlights include the
trappings of a 17th-century keeping room, a 19th-century bustled wedding dress,
a turn-of-the century bathing suit and assorted articles reflecting the home
front of World War II.
